I call this dress Mary… Miss Poppins, if you’re nasty, because it can be super conservative or super sexy. It has an adorable illusion top with a collar and bow that I just put a flesh colored undershirt under, and a little attaching short skirt. It was cold, so I put on leggings and boots. I made it more conservative, but if it were New Year’s Eve I could just put a little bando under the top, and go bare legged with cute high heels, and that’s when it’s Miss Poppins if you’re Nasty.
I loved wearing this look. I felt fun, sexy, and girly. The best part of it was that it was only fourteen dollars at De-lux in Santa Ana. I am a short girl, so I did have to tailor it, but when the prices are so great it is totally worth it. It just goes to prove that it is completely possible not to spend a lot of money and still feel great about what you are wearing!
Hi everyone! I just got this great bright red lipstick. I immediately thought, “I want to do a great 1950’s inspired outfit around this lipstick.” I have a black and white striped shirt, a bow necklace, and sunglasses that were all very “Jackie O.” I tried on the outfit with a houndstooth jacket and it did work for the 1960’s look I wanted. However, in the back of my head I knew that the 1970’s Annie Hall like elephant jacket had to come out. I took that crazy but amazing jacket, put it on, and it totally worked! The pairing of simple stripes and a crazy pattern really seemed to come together nicely.
If you are on a limited budget you can still totally have fun with clothes. Nothing that I usually wear is more than $20 and I look forward to dressing myself everyday! I shop at a lot of consignment shops, stores that aren’t as well known, and sometimes even at Goodwill. The good part about consignment shops and Thrift stores is they usually give their proceeds to charity, and you find unique pieces. The outfit I am featuring was not expensive at all. I hope this will inspire people to mix and match patterns, shop at consignment stores, and watch Annie Hall.

Who do you want to be today? Jackie O, Cher, Janet… Miss Jackson if you’re nasty? The good thing about fashion is you can be whoever you want to be! In a lot of ways, fashion is limitless. Sometimes, with a disability like epilepsy, you can feel very limited in your own body. “Don’t ever forget to take your medication!” “Don’t drink too much alcohol.” “Don’t look at a strobe light especially in the Miss Nasty dress!” I know I love fashion and I love to look at the stars from today and from the 50’s and 60’s and imitate what they wear and are wearing. For a lot of people with epilepsy, maintaining a job is difficult because of the active seizures or because of side effects from medication. Well, if money is an issue, I think shopping second hand is a great solution!
I recently discovered this on-line company called ThredUp where you can order consignment clothing on your computer and it gets sent right to your house. This is really awesome especially when you don’t have your driver’s license! I ordered these pink Ann Taylor Loft pants from ThredUp for only twenty dollars originally one-hundred, and if I do say so myself, they make my butt look like a million. My Muse was Ann Margret from Bye Bye Birdie in the scene, “I gotta lotta livin to do.” I always thought she was so beautiful and sassy. I wanted to be just like her when I got older. I went to Savers and Buffalo Exchange and got two tops and some great sunglasses as an accessory. Savers donates to charities including The Epilepsy Foundation and Buffalo Exchange donates their proceeds to local charities, so it is great to go to these places for all different kinds of looks. I got a lot of items that could go vintage but could also work for the modern day. I hope you like what I found!
I am now going to give you a tip for what to wear on these summer nights when you go out. I have found that you will get attention when you wear a tight black dress and a strong red lip. For whatever reason men go crazy for this look. I blame it on Robert Palmer’s video, “ Addicted to Love.” If you watch it, those girls can’t even dance, and the routine is no more than step together and step together. The girl playing the drums doesn’t even pretend to try, but they are mesmerizing. They are just so sexy in those dresses you can’t get your eyes off of them. Do not lick your lips like they do! I tried it once and I came off creepy as if I might have had a meth problem. I do suggest wearing flesh colored heels if you are short. I am shorter than the average short person, so I need to elongate myself and flesh colored heels serve to do just that. I have two tight black dresses and I have always gotten asked out in them, even back when I looked like a boy. The great thing is you can find black dresses anywhere in every size. Good luck on your journey shopping second hand and I hope you find the right tight black dress!
How do you stay up with the trends when you’re on a fixed income or you only work a part-time job? Well, let me tell you it is possible. I love dressing for how you feel, dressing up, and dressing in a theme. I do that by being selective on where I shop and how much I spend.I feel good when I feel confident in what I am wearing. I usually have an idea of what I want to look like for the event I am going to. I almost always go on Pinterest to get some ideas. Then, I see if maybe I can put this boho chic look together using that white tee shirt I have in the closet and those cowboy boots I like, but I can go to Buffalo Exchange and get a new belt or torn jeans for ten to twenty dollars. Sometimes all you need is a little pop of color in your outfit to make it stunning. You can even go to a thrift store and get a cool vintage belt or piece of jewelry to add that little zest that makes it different than anyone else’s.
There are a lot of smaller stores that have clothes that are on trend for less expensive. I think it is better to buy it for a low price if it is trendy anyways. It might go out of style pretty soon and you’ll be happy you didn’t spend too much money on it. Nektar, Fashion Q, Style World, Styles for Less, and Buffalo Exchange are all great stores to shop at. You can even go to Thrift stores for some fun jewelry and purses. The Savers in Lomita gives a percentage to The Epilepsy Foundation so you are giving back. I use to give myself only twenty dollars to spend on clothes each week. I actually got some really cute clothes and jewelry, and if you do that for a while you will get a good collection of clothes to mix and match.
It is very important to know how to accessorize. This may sound silly but a seven dollar belt or scarf can completely change your outfit. You can have just a tee shirt and jeans on then you add a powerful turquoise statement necklace and BAM POW you got yourself a major outfit. I have a tendency to look like a little kid. I am only five feet tall and I look younger than what I am, so giving me a waste by adding a belt is very important. Watch the movie or google Annie Hall. Diane Keaton is a great accessorizer in that movie. She wears a lot of scarves, hats, and gloves. The gloves might be a bit much, but she shows how adding just a little something extra makes your look memorable. P.S. you should watch that movie anyways because it’s amazing!
You should also know your body type and dress in a way that flatters you. If you have a mother that’s anything like mine you will always know what looks good and what looks bad on you. I am short and pear shaped, so baggy things make me look fat and round. When I come out in a baggy outfit that does not show off my waist or legs I swear you would think my mother had the seizure disorder. Her feelings are deep and real and there is no pill for what she has. You should look in the mirror see what body shape you have and dress to accentuate your best features. You can also google celebrities that have your shape and see what they do to look taller, slimmer, and curvier. Since I am short and a little curvy I like to see how Hayden Panettiere dresses. Meghan Trainor does a great job dressing her body.
Fashion is so much fun, and you can express yourself and have a voice with any amount of money you have. I hope I gave you some good tips and you can start shopping. If you have any unknown stores be sure to let me know!
